OUR  BACKSTORY

TAKING ROOT

PEOPLE FOR A COOL FUTURE is brought to you by the same people that started the successful environmental non-profit group, PEOPLE FOR A CLEAN OCEAN in 1985.

Originally, PEOPLE FOR A CLEAN OCEAN formed to stop North San Diego coastal and inland cities from obtaining waivers of the Federal Clean Water Act, that (if successful) would lower the sewage treatment of three local ocean outfalls — which together discharged over 60 million gallons of sewage per day!

PEOPLE FOR A CLEAN OCEAN printed a lot of bumper stickers to get the message out!  And, over 15,000 people showed their support by putting a CLEAN OCEAN bumper sticker on the back of their car.

In the end, with the support of the entire community, PEOPLE FOR A CLEAN OCEAN prevented eight North San Diego cities and the County of San Diego from reducing the level of treatment sewage received — and kept their local waters clean!

In addition to working against chronic sewage pollution, PEOPLE FOR A CLEAN OCEAN successfully fought offshore oil drilling.

When the federal government attempted to sell oil lease tracts along the entire California coastline, PEOPLE FOR A CLEAN OCEAN sprang into action — coordinating a massive, community letter writing campaign (by students and the public) that assisted the effort to stop oil drilling, forcing the Feds to scrap their plans.

Congress said — it was the most letters they had ever received on any previous issue!

But, PEOPLE FOR A CLEAN OCEAN did not stop there!  They moved on to another great cause — saving a giant kelp forest in their local marine conservation area.

Under threat of close to 300,000 cubic yards of sand and sediment being dumped into ocean pits adjacent to these giant kelp forests, PEOPLE FOR A CLEAN OCEAN convinced the project’s directing agency to implement an alternative plan — protecting a thriving marine ecosystem and saving millions of dollars.

OUR EVOLUTION

Not long after the victory with the local kelp forest, marine scientists made PEOPLE FOR A CLEAN OCEAN aware of a new threat:  Due to climate change, all of the giant kelp forests along California's coast were in a slow state of dying.  And, some Southern California shellfish were showing a loss of calcification of their shells.

This marine destruction is the result of acidification and warming of the ocean — due to climate change.

In addition to these immediate ocean concerns, our communities have also been ravaged by ever more intensive fire storms — also due to climate change.

With climate change concerns escalating, PEOPLE FOR A CLEAN OCEAN decided it was time for new action and evolved in 2020 to form a new non-profit group:

PEOPLE FOR A COOL FUTURE

OUR NEW MISSION:  To tackle our global climate crisis by organizing our local communities.
